Home Automation without Internet

Some people have unreliable internet, or little to no internet access. Fortunately, home automation is still possible, although a little more clunky. For the basics, you don't even need a computer.

I used X-10 technology since the 1980s, and it still works just as well as ever today, although the hardware is getting harder to find. Basically, you need one or more repeaters unless you live in a small space, some modules to plug things into, some wall switches, and some controllers. Computer programs allow you to set schedules, and remotes placed in strategic locations, or carried on you, will control lights and appliances. Be aware that some wall switches do not work with LED bulbs.

Again, this is useful for those with mobility problems; being able to turn things on and off without getting up is handy. You won't be able to turn things on and off remotely without internet, although you may be able to send a command through the internet to your master computer program.

The Shion computer program for Mac works, as do many programs for PC.
